FAQ

Here are the questions I would ask me, since no one else has bothered...

Who are you?

Law student, Newly minted JD, mommy, wife, red-head, loud car-singer, chocoholic. I love wine. I hate artificial sweetener. I am short, like 5' 2" on a good hair day. I'm over 30, but not so far as I feel old. People say "you're so weird" to me at least once a day. It is usually after I express unabashed enthusiasm for something completely dorky, like an interesting legal issue or some odd bit of trivia. I'm used to it.

I am not into fashion or celebrities or reality television... except every now and then can get sucked into a season of American Idol, or visit the Fug girls, or go ga ga over a pair of ridiculously cute shoes I see on a classmate. I don't particularly like to cook, but can make a serviceable spicy red Italian sauce. I am a study in contradictions like that. You know, like everyone else.

I'm the oldest of three and first generation American. My sibs and I are among the first in our family, on any side, to not only go to college but get advanced degrees. And we did it with minimal financial support from our parents. Academic scholarships and loans, baby.

I am a mommy to a fabulous boy who makes me shake my head in wonder every day.

I married young to a terrific guy, and though we had some "growing up" pains, I am truly blessed to call him my partner in crime.

Where is Bullshark stationed? (updated 1/07)

For basically all of 2006, Bullshark was recalled to active duty in the Navy. He was in Iraq, Baghdad area, from May through December. At the time, we didn't expect him home til May 2007. So for all intents and purposes, I started 1L as a single mommy. Then we got an early Christmas present

He was active duty in the military for a few years when we first married, then he changed professions (teacher) but remained in the Reserves. On active duty, farthest he went was Texas and Maine. In the Reserves, Iraq and a few countries in Asia. Go figure.

So, what are you going to do when you graduate? (March 2009)

This is sincerely the question I am asked most frequently. After a lot of angst (see... I don't know, about half the blog posts from 2008-2009), I got a job. I consider myself very lucky.

Hey what happened to that one post in which. . . . ? (June 2009)

So now that I've graduated, I have purged the archives a bit. I thought about this a lot. There are a lot of law students who find my blog from random depressing Google searches and its nice to know that others have gone before you and survived.

Before the purge, I had over 800 published posts. That has been pared down considerably, but there is still enough angst in the archives to make an emo kid cringe.

Edited to add: as of 8/24/2009: 571 published; 938 total. Yeah.

CATEGORIES:

MILS? MILP!

The Weekly MILS (Moms In Law School) Roundup is now the Weekly MILP (Moms in the Legal Profession) Roundup because we discovered that these women eventually graduate and become lawyers. Who knew? We considered MILF (moms in the legal field) but figured the p0rn Google hits weren't worth the pun.

It is hosted on a rotating basis bewteen PT-LawMom and A Little Fish in Law School (that's here) and is posted each Sunday.

Personally, I like to work a theme, which means sometimes a great post from the week I do the Roundup doesn't make the Roundup. Which is why you should just blogline everyone in my blogroll. They've all been vetted (by me) for awesomeness.

Roundup:

The Weekly Law School Round-Up is published through Evan Schaeffer's Legal Underground and through Divine Angst, Nobody. These are posts that either met that week's theme or otherwise caught the attention of the Roundup. If you're looking for a quick overview of posts to get a feel for the blog, click the Roundup category -- you'll see a little bit of everything. Which could add up to a whole lot of nothing.

Neutral Buoyancy?

The blog category formerly known as 'just me.' Neutral buoyancy is a diving term... it refers to the status you attain when, under water, you are no longer floating upwards due to too much air in you 'vest'(BCU), nor are you sinking due to too much weight. When you achieve this state, you float -- suspended, perfectly balanced, at peace. You can then focus on the beauty around you.

I always had difficulty achieving this state underwater.

I also have difficulty achieving this state in life.

That's what this category is about.

Hi Butterflyfish! I just stumbled across your blog today, and I love it! Your whole section about neutral buoyancy is beautiful...I often have trouble attaining that state in life, too. :)

Hello there. I found you through the Ms. JD forum and the "Wish I Would Have Known" blog. I just wanted thank you for all the honest advice and perspective on law school. I am starting law school this fall and trying to do what I can to prepare for it, at least mentally anyway. Your posts have been very helpful. Like you, going to law school was a big decision for me. I'm leaving a very secure job and incurring more debt, but after a great deal of consideration, advice from others, and a couple Pro/Con lists, I am confident I am making the right decision.

My husband is active duty Navy and will be deploying for the first time in September. It was nice to find your blog, another law student whose spouse is in the service. I apologize for the long comment. You have a great blog going. Please keep it up!

I have been reading your posts for a few months now. Not daily but I will spend time reading several all at once. I really enjoy them.

I am starting law school in less than a month. I will be working full-time and going to school at night. My biggest fear - balancing it all and not losing my relationship with my 4 sons.

Good Luck from a fellow law student and Mom in Law ;)

This was the first law blog that I read and I've been addicted to living vicariously through those who have done what I'm attempting to do now. I'm an 0L and it's been so helpful to read your posts. Thanks for blogging so often! :)
