FAQ

Here are the questions I would ask me, since no one else has bothered...

Who are you?

I am short, like 5' 2" on a good hair day. I'm over the big three-oh in age, but not so far as I feel old, except around my 22 year old classmates. I am not into fashion or celebrities or reality television, but every now and then can get sucked into a season of American Idol, or visit the Fug girls, or go ga ga over a pair of ridiculously cute shoes I see on a classmate.

I don't particularly like to cook, but can make a servicable spicy red Italian sauce.

I'm the oldest of three and first generation American. My sibs and I are among the first in our family, on any side, to not only go to college but get advanced degrees. And we did it with minimal financial support from our parents, who were supportive in every other way.

I am a mommy to a fabulous boy who makes me shake my head in wonder every day.

I married young to a terrific guy, and though we had some "growing up" pains, I am truly blessed to call him my partner in crime.

Why semi-anonymous?

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean future employers aren't out to get me. In fact, this is my second blog because my 1L classmates found my old one (admittedly because of my own indiscretion)and things got... uncomfortable.

So, no more posts about your classmates or profs?

Not that I did all that much of it beyond the ususal 1L venting, but probably not so much.

Where is Bullshark stationed? (updated 1/07)

For basically all of 2006, Bullshark was recalled to active duty in the Navy. He was in Iraq, Baghdad area, from May through December. At the time, we didn't expect him home til May 2007. So for all intents and purposes, I started 1L as a single mommy. Then we got an early Christmas present

He was active duty in the military for a few years when we first married, then he changed professions (teacher) but remained in the Reserves. On active duty, farthest he went was Texas and Maine. In the Reserves, Iraq and a few countries in Asia. Go figure.

Why law school?

Really good question, and the answer changes daily. But unlike a lot of law students, I didn't stumble into it blindly. I am going because I am looking forward to the intellectual challenge of studying law, of mastering legal writing, of 'thinking like a lawyer.' I am actually excited about that. That doesn't mean I'm a Pollyanna about the law or law school itself -- I am realistic, and law school gives me plenty to bitch about.

And, as I once told an e-friend, "I blog, therefore I whine."

Categories: Roundup?

The Weekly Law School Round-Up is published through Evan Schaeffer's Legal Underground and through Divine Angst. These are posts that either met that week's theme or otherwise caught the attention of the Roundup.

If you're looking for a quick overview of posts to get a feel for the blog, click the Roundup category -- you'll see a little bit of everything. Which could add up to a whole lot of nothing.

Categories: MILS?

The Weekly MILS (Moms In Law School) Roundup is the brainchild of Saramel at Reasonable Expectations. It is hosted on a rotating basis bewteen PT-LawMom and A Little Fish in Law School blogs and is usually posted no later than Monday morning (the plan, of course, being a Sunday post).

Personally, I like to work a theme, which means sometimes a great post from the week I do the Roundup doens't make the Roundup. Which is why you should just blogline everyone in my blogroll. They've all been vetted (by me) for awesomeness.

Categories: Neutral buoyancy?

The blog category formerly known as 'just me.' Neutral buoyancy is a diving term... it refers to the status you attain when, under water, you are no longer floating upwards due to too much air in you 'vest'(BCU), nor are you sinking due to too much weight. When you achieve this state, you float -- suspended, perfectly balanced, at peace. You can then focus on the beauty around you.

I always had difficulty achieving this state underwater.

I also have difficulty achieving this state in life.

That's what this category is about.

Hi Butterflyfish! I just stumbled across your blog today, and I love it! Your whole section about neutral buoyancy is beautiful...I often have trouble attaining that state in life, too. :)

Hello there. I found you through the Ms. JD forum and the "Wish I Would Have Known" blog. I just wanted thank you for all the honest advice and perspective on law school. I am starting law school this fall and trying to do what I can to prepare for it, at least mentally anyway. Your posts have been very helpful. Like you, going to law school was a big decision for me. I'm leaving a very secure job and incurring more debt, but after a great deal of consideration, advice from others, and a couple Pro/Con lists, I am confident I am making the right decision.

My husband is active duty Navy and will be deploying for the first time in September. It was nice to find your blog, another law student whose spouse is in the service. I apologize for the long comment. You have a great blog going. Please keep it up!
