Poop

Everybody poops, right?

So did Clownfish.

In the potty.

For the first time.

While at daycare.

One of those childhood milestones that Mommies everywhere love. We talk about it with other Mommies, like the first smile that *we swear* wasn't gas, and the first spontaneously said "I love you." We dread it because its another step towards "I don't need you as much anymore."

And I missed it.

Seems like a stupid thing to feel a little sad about, huh?

Not like it isn't going to happen again hundreds of times in his childhood.

Cuz everybody poops.

Right...

Fish snacks

Clownfish blows my mind.

Bullshark brought home a cake from his "welcome back party" today. Clownfish tried it and liked it. After dinner, he asked for a treat.

Bullshark offered cake or craisins.

He picked craisins.

He picks apples over donuts. He picks bananas over cookies. He picks green beans over pasta. He picks strawberries over cheese.

I wish I could say the same for his Mommy.

"Ungenerous," maybe?

It is time we stopped being niggardly in construing civil rights legislation. It is time we kept up with Congress and construed its laws in the full amplitude needed to rid their enforcement of the lingering tolerance for racial discrimination that we sanction today.

Adickes v. S. H. Kress & Co., 398 U.S. 144 (1970)

Anyone else think they could have used a different word?

EDIT: I know the word has no relation to the slur. I just ran across this case and thought the context was particularly ironic when read aloud. Hence my suggestion.

confession

I fell asleep at school today.

Not in class, in the comfy chairs in the lounge.

I was reading property.

I was out for about an hour.

This is not good.

Clownfish saw a clownfish

So, we took advantage of the long weekend and drove to a "big city" aquarium yesterday. Clownfish loved it -- he was mesmerized by the big tanks of swimming fish. Clownfish kept asking "what that name?" I was excited -- its been about 5 years since I've been able to dive, so I was rusty on my fish identification. But a two-year-old is hardly going to call me on it when I misidentify an Ocean Surgeon as a large Tang. But I did remember many more than I forgot, and it made me pine a little for the life we used to have, where the weather was warm and the diving was frequent. But I digress.

Clownfish was most enthralled by the shark tank (as was Bullshark of course). It had a few large sea turtles in it, one of which came over and pressed his nose against the glass near Clownfish's hand. He excitedly told us the turtle "kissed" him. Also, sharks are "not scary, they funny."

Afterwards, Clownfish ran on the beach. He really wanted to "pet the seagull head." Big city seagulls don't scare easily. They're not going to fly away when an exuberant toddler runs toward them. But they managed, through fast walking and occasional short-flight hops, to elude his grasp.

It was truly a great day.

Grades

My law school doesn't do grade inflation. Like many "not" top tier schools, they adhere to a very strict curve, though thankfully its a B- median now and not the C+ of old.

So, how did I do? Well, I did better than the curve in all classes, and really above the curve in two (Torts and Crim). I feel pretty good.

The classes I did less well in were midterms and I have a chance to fix them. And Legal Research which I sort of blew off because it was two credits and I had to make priority choices. I can hopefully pull that up some.

But overall, not devastated by law school exams for my first semester. I know, its a marathon, not a sprint.

Would it be ominous foreshadowing if I said, "Wow, I really hope I am not linking to this post in May saying something like It all went downhill from here?" Yeah, I've never been one to feel happy about something for long -- I keep looking ahead to the next potential disaster.

The waiting is over, anyway, so that's good.

I think I'll take this weekend off and celebrate a little. Maybe. Catch you next week.

Why do you build me up, buttercup...

Anyone else singing along now?

Good, its a mood lifter. Clownfish likes to sing the echo part -- I try to change up the "traditional" kids music with occasional rendtions of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and "Twist and Shout." Because the wheels on the bus can only go round and round so many times before you start to consider driving into bridge abutments.

The song has been stuck in my head today though, as I am *still* waiting for grades.

Waiting...

Ran into a fellow 1L (in the other section) in the grocery store yesterday. I discovered I am not the only one who logs in every day to find out if any grades have been posted. We joked about logging on three times a day, including New Year's, and my spouse/his girlfriend kind of rolled their eyes. I suggested they start a support group because law students are neurotic by design, and this is only the first of 6 semesters of this stuff (not including summer).

I think Bullshark paled slightly at that thought.

This is worse than waiting on LSAT results. And I never stressed out waiting for undergrad or grad school grades. So this is probably one of my first experiences waiting on grades . . . pins- and-needles-style.

It sucks.*

* More statements of the obvious forthcoming in future posts.

A moment frozen in my mind

Bullshark chopping vegetables.
Clownfish loading them into a bowl and mixing.
They cooked dinner together while I sat and watched.
Good rock music playing in the background.
A little family dancing around the kitchen.
Glass of wine in hand.
Its a good night.
