Things that don't happen
A friend told me yesterday
As a lawyer, you'll spend a lot of time preparing for things that never
happen.
Had my first experience with that. Six hours of my life I'll never get back.
Maybe I should keep a running total?

So true! I remember the first time I spent the weekend working all weekend practically 24/7 with a team of lawyers and paralegals preparing, revising, and re-revising this huge, highly technical MSJ with elaborate exhibits only to have them cancel it on Monday afternoon right after we filed when the other side saw our MSJ and decided to settle. I literally cried. The lawyers just moved on to the next case. Such is litigation and their bills would still be paid. Still, I don't know how you raise up the energy every single time when the potential to actually go to trial is so low.
Don't keep a running total . . it's way too depressing. I went through an entire trial once to have it all settle anyway after everybody made arguments. Instead, I'd recommend keeping a running tally of days left until retirement!
omg, I have experienced that a lot! many of the projects I work on are never used because the case gets put aside, dropped, or settled too quickly... boo!
:)
you couldn't possibly keep up with a running total. i'm pretty sure my entire 2006 summer was for nothing. that's just one of the many reasons i got out of the legal field. the whole thing is for nothing.
This is why I used to love being a legal secretary - I was paid by the hour. It didn't matter to me what got used and what got thrown away - in fact, the law firm's waste was my gain. Not looking forward to being on the other side of that equation!
That's how I feel most days. Very little of what I do means squat. Makes it hard to go to work.
