Avoiding my civic duty
I have jury duty in May.
No postponing it ... I did that already.
Do you think the first words out of my mouth should be "law student," "summer associate at local law firm," or "mother to young child?"
Which one is most likely to get me sent home fastest?
Edited to add: No offense to Cee, who I am sure is answering tongue-in-cheek, but I really don't want to give any answers that will raise questions on the character and fitness section of my bar application. So, no, I am not going to advocate the death penalty for petty theft, nor will I launch into a profanity laden tirade as my own mother helpfully suggested.
Edited again to add: I was actually looking forward to jury duty in principle... until I realized how much it would mess with my summer job to get on a panel.

5 little fish:
when they interview you tell that that ALL offenses should be punished by death penalty- especially J walking.
All of them...as quickly as you can. maybe if you talk really fast and act ridiculously excited about the whole thing, they'll send you home for reason of insanity.
I kicked a law student off my jury panel. Lawyers are one thing - and sometime they actually appreciate the break. But as a student you can give off the "I'm so intellectual and I'll overanalyze every element of the crime/accident/case to death and make it terrible for both sides." Go for it.
I actually WANT to be selected for jury duty. But they'll never select me. They probably won't select you, either. They don't want lawyers or law students in my area!
Apparently mother to young child is the most effective. If you are the primary caregiver without funds or effective means of finding alternate care, they tend to give you a break. At least in DC.
