MILS #56: 1988

Welcome to the Weekly MILP (Moms In the Legal Profession) Roundup. It is hosted on a rotating basis between PT-LawMom, A New Duck, and A Little Fish in Law School blogs. We originally rounded up just the moms in law school, but then discovered those women eventually graduate. So now all the moms in the legal field are represented. We aim for Sunday posts.

Next week, it'll be back at PT-LawMom's place.

This week's theme: In honor of the 20-year meme everyone seems to be doing lately (which I will probably post later this week myself), I present the Flashback to 1988 Edition.
  • Iran-Contra
  • Pan-Am 103
  • Nintendo
  • Dan Quayle
  • Rain Man
  • Who Framed Roger Rabbit
  • Morrison v. Olsen (this is a law student blog after all)
  • Summer Olympics in Seoul
  • "Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin infects my brain

Ok, are we in the right mind-set now? 1988. I went with songs in the top 100 from that year. Here we go:

Endless Summer Nights (Richard Marx). Lag Liv.

Sweet Child O' Mine (Guns N' Roses). Magic Cookie.

Naughty Girls (Need Love Too) (Samantha Fox). Googiebaba
Not about the kittens, aboout the choice between evil corporate overlords.

Pour Some Sugar On Me (Def Leppard). Peanut Butter Burrito.

Bad Medicine (Bon Jovi). Pt-Lawmom.

One Moment In Time (Whitney Houston). Cee Palmer.
This more of a "Whitney's on crack" reference than anything else.

Out Of The Blue (Debbie Gibson). Lawmummy.
This one works on two levels.

Hazy Shade Of Winter (Bangles). Legally Certifiable

Heaven Is A Place On Earth (Belinda Carlisle) Zuska.
Good luck in the new place, Zuska!

What Have I Done To Deserve This? (Pet Shop Boys & Dusty Springfield). One New Duck.

I Still Believe (Brenda K. Starr). Proto Attorney.

Tied hands

You know, this whole "Don't Blog About Work Club" thing is terrible. I would never be indiscreet in a way that would harm my (future) clients or my firm. But on the off chance someone is obsessive enough to piece together the bits and pieces of this semi-anonymous blog and find me out, I am sure there is enough that could be taken out of context that would cause me some professional damage.

That's such a shame. Because I am working on some pretty neat stuff right now. My boss has recently given me some added responsibility, I think to see how I handle it. And I am flying totally solo on a minor matter tomorrow... but its my first time doing anything like that. And they trust me to do this. That's a really neat feeling.

And I'd love to tell you about it, but not in a way that would breach confidences. Just in more detail than these vague generalities and half-truths that even as I type them make me a little squeamish and make me want to delete this and all other posts right now.

I'd love to write more for the pre-Ls and 1Ls who are like me. The ones who didn't know any lawyers growing up, who have never been involved in a law suit, who have no lawyer friends, and who are just aching to know what kind of work they might be given in their first foray into a summer gig.

I suppose I can tell them about some of the things I've figured out the hard way--like don't round down your billables because you don't want to admit how much time it took you to figure something out. The partner reviewing all that is gonna knock off a bunch of time anyway and he fully expects it will take you some time.

But that's not much insight into my day-to-day experience. I noted this last year as well when I was really working outside my comfort zone in ubercorporate environment. And I'd love to talk about the 'wrong fit' and the 'right fit' and whether any of that is definable and blazing trails and thinking about where I belong in the law. But some of that begs for the kind of detail I am unable to provide right now.

So I am sorry to anyone reading this post who is thinking "thanks for nothing."

Scarred for life

In July 2006, I posted about the songs I own of which I am ashamed. I refused then to be ashamed of my occasional indulgence of ABBA, and still refuse to be ashamed. However, I am corrupting another generation, and it is causing me concern. With the new Mama Mia movie, commercials are playing snippets of ABBA songs (that one in particular) all the time. I find myself humming and singing Mama Mia. Clownfish asked me to sing the whole song, so about two weeks ago, we played it several times from Youtube.

Tonight, before I put him to bed, he says

Mama Mia
Here I go again
My my how could i Ah-zist you
Mama Mia
Here I go again
Just because I missed you.

He really got it close, huh?

Great, yet another reason Clownfish will need extensive therapy.

"'ld rather be with someone for the wrong reasons then be alone for the right."

I am not a neo maxi zoom dweebie!!

Bonus points if you can name that movie!

Doube bonus points:
"Go that way really fast. If something gets in your way, turn."

Hat tip, E. McPan.

Accio

With Bullshark and Clownfish gone, I've had time to re-read some Harry Potter at night. And I was wondering, how do you pronounce this word in your head when you read it:

Accio. As in the summoning charm.

I think of it as AX-io.

There is also, OCKio, OSSio, ACKio.

I think its ACKio in the movie.

What do you think?

Sandbox

I wore my blue suit today. The pants fit just right, the jacket sleeves are the perfect length, and the light blue cami underneath that somehow makes my green eyes look cool. My hair was shiny and straight and withstood the humidity. I had on my comfy blue pumps that have a touch of navy patent leather. I even busted out with the make up I don't always bother with when I pan to just sit in my office and write all day. I felt like I looked like a lawyer. So that's the story I expected to tell tonight . . . about attending my first deposition and looking like a lawyer.

Until I got home and Bullshark told me he might be going back to Iraq.

So the story about the depo will wait. I'm gonna go cuddle up with him and pretend to enjoy whatever he's watching on the Discovery/History/Military channel.

Scenes from a wedding

Dad: Doves. They released doves. If I'd have known, I'd have brought a hawk.
Me: Too bad Bullshark wasn't here... insert sound of cocking shotgun and a cry of "pull!"
Mom: I wonder how they get them back... they have to return them, right?
Me: What, to rent-a-dove? They don't. They're gone, Mom.
Mom: But won't they get hurt or eaten or something?
Me: Ummm . . . probably.
Mom: Maybe they're homing doves.
Me: Uh huh.
. . . .
Noticing later that in leiu of favors the bride and groom made a donation to the humane society.

* * *

Cocktail hour: in honor of the fifth of July, cocktail hour involved hot dogs and hamburgers on a grill. And calamari, apparently an American tradition of which I was heretofore unaware.

* * *

The doves took off so fast the photographer didn't get a picture. He did, however, shoot the empty cage. During the reception they did a slideshow of scenes fromt he ceremony we had just seen. . . and there was the empty cage, right after a shot of the B&G kissing.

* * *

There were a lot of people in formal wear with visible tattoos. I thought I was at a Hell's Angels nuptial celebration. I am not anti-ink. But seeing the Roadrunner's head protrude above the tuxedo shirt collar on one's neck just seemed to cross a line with me.

* * *
I have officially heard "Don't Stop Believing" one too many times this summer. This time, no Thriller.

MILP #53: In her own words III: IHOW Ultimatum

Welcome to the Weekly MILP (Moms In the Legal Profession) Roundup. It is hosted on a rotating basis between PT-LawMom, A New Duck, and A Little Fish in Law School blogs. We originally rounded up just the moms in law school, but then discovered they eventually graduate. So now all the moms in the legal field are represented. We aim for Sunday posts.

Next week, it'll be back at PT-LawMom's place.

This week's theme: The In Her Own Words Ultimatum*

On Babies:

I’m thinking solid foods can wait until she’s a teenager. One New Duck

I thought that rice cereal was supposed to cause the baby to produce less poop. Peanut Butter Burrito

Babies don't use toilet paper! Starting to Melt

It's the baby equivalent of the Emergi-vet. Tranny Head

Be kind to your web-footed friends, For a duck may be somebody's mother... Magic Cookie

On Blogging:

I’m at the point where it would be easy-peasy for anyone I attend class with to figure out who I am. Pt Lawmom

On Lawyering, Working, and Parenting:

I want to feel like my work makes a difference, not just gets me a paycheck. Proto Attorney

Ah, preparing for the Bar, it is so glamorous. Lag Liv

The first thing we’re moving into the place is a FAIRY? Zuska

Seriously--what kind of lawyer starts crying in a deposition? Legally Certifiable

* Wherein I pull quotes from MILP blogs, hopefully out of context in a way that makes you want to click, and call that a theme. Yep, shamefully lazy. Told you this theme would repeat, again.

And like the movie, there is a distinct lack of ultimatums .

And then he suggested I brush up on my golf game

Dad: So how's the summer job going?

Me: You know how I have always said I really like going to law school but wasn't so sure I would like being a lawyer?

Dad: Yeah . . .

Me: I kinda like being a lawyer.

Dad: Ah . . . I was afraid of that.
