Meta Kid Stuff

I started this blog when Clownfish was about 18 months old.  I didn't chronicle him as a baby, but I love love love that this blog has served as an on-line record of some of his development.  I actually did a "blog to print" of Clownfish posts last year.  Awesome.

Then I had Angelfish and thought, aha! now I can write about a baby too!  It won't be too much because Clownfish posts have been fewer and further between, and largely consist of him saying something funny.  So people won't mind the occasional baby milestone thing.

And then I had Lionfish.  And now its like... if I chronicle the kids the way I want to, I won't post about anything else, ever.  So lately I've blogged less about the girls than maybe I would have otherwise. Maternity leave is intensifying the issue somewhat, but I definitely feel like I've refrained from writing some baby posts.  (Looking at the recent archives, one might find this difficult to believe. But its true.)

If I saw this on someone else's blog, I'd comment and say "screw it, its your blog, write what you want to!"

To that, I say... meh.

Also, I've been thinking of relaxing my policy of not posting kid pics.  My blog to print book of Clownfish would have been 100 times more awesome with pictures.  Many of my bloggy friends post kid pics, and it does not appear as if the world has ended.   Thoughts?

  1. Screw it, it's your blog, write what you want to! (But my personal preference as a loyal reader would be a mix of kid posts and grown-up posts.) And YES to pictures. My blog would have a lot more pictures if I didn't nearly always scribble off my posts by email while taking a break from work.

How did the blog to print book turn out? How did you do it? I've been thinking of doing that for a while.

    1. Blog to print turned out ok. I used the bloglink through blogger.

Using labels, it can filter, so I had it collect only Clownfish posts from a specified time period. Then I went through and manually un-selected a few posts I didn't want to include. I chose the cheapest finishing options (paperback, black and white pages because no pics) and got the whole thing for under $20 I think.

Interface is a little clunky, but play around with the advance options and you'll be fine. It generates a table of contents of blog post titles, which I thought was nice.

I recall LL saying she did it once too.

    2. Also it appears its gotten better since last year -- you can add pictures to the book in connection with blog posts, even if those pictures aren't on the blog!

      Score one for post "self-destruction."

  2. I always post pics. I cannot imagine a feasible way in which they could be used to harm the kids. The only real concern for me is being identified (by a boss, e.g.) through them, but that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

And I also like a good mix. Work life balance - in life, and in posting!

  3. I agree with the idea of writing the blog the way you want. I always figure people can skip any post that I write that does not relate to them or interest them.

As far as posting pictures of your kids, I know a lot of people do it, but I am cautious. My compromise is to post very few and not ones actually identifiable of her. But, then, I feel a little like a hypocrite because I love pictures of the kids on my favorite blogs I follow. I have always loved your "self-destructing posts."

  4. As someone without kids (and no desire to have any...EVER), I still like pictures of other people's kids (not in a creepy way). The people I tend to read who have kids are very judicious in their kid photos, which helps. I mean, if I wanted to see a million photos without any cute stories to go along with it, I'd just join facebook, HA. I say do what you want and I'll still read you!

  5. I usually delete photos of my kid after a while, unless they just show her from the back. It's not that I'm worried about creeps, I'm worried about my parents finding my blog (which is why there is a very rarely updated blog under my real name that I use to post pictures of Pea from time to time).

Also, E. McPan is hilarious, as usual.

  6. First, yes definitely blog about whatever you want to! This is why I started a new blog identity. My posts were focusing more on pregnancy and my kids than law stuff. I didn't want to be a mom blog pretending to be a law blog so I just switched over to a mostly "mom blog." (also I was tired of being worried/paranoid about staying annonymous)

I get why you are hesitant to post pictures on your blog. It is also interesting to ask yourself when your kids grow up, how will they feel with all those pictures of them on the internet. But in general, I think it is harmless and no worse than having your picture and name printed up in an online newspaper article.

  7. When I graduated law school and started working, I purposed to focus a bit more on my home life in blogging than my work life. For the sake of professionalism, mostly. I didn't want to have to worry about getting "caught." I also love kid stories from others! So fun to be watching some of the bloggers' kids from infancy all the way up to school age.

Re: Pictures - you know I do post pictures. My kids know that I do, and don't mind. When I posted vacation pictures, I was very careful to ensure that towels, waves or framing prevented bikini shots. If we are recognized, hopefully I've been careful enough in choosing my words that no issues will result.

  8. I say post more pics! We want to see your adorable kids! And yeah, not in a creepy way. I'll be worried about posting pics when Google can finally search by image, which is maybe impossible. As long as I can stay pretty anonymous (i.e., not be searchable) I'm a happy camper. And thanks for mentioning the blog to print. I totally need to do that for all my past baby posts--what a great scrapbooking tool!
