Leap Day

Angelfish has a tummy bug. Clownfish's school is closing early, anticipating a snowmadgeddon that probably won't come.  I took a vacation day to stay home with the little munchkin and to pick up the big bear at noon.  I've cleaned up a lot of puke.  But I also got one almost full hour of snuggles. Could be worse.

MILP # 241: Whitney

The Weekly MILP (Moms In the Legal Profession) Roundup is hosted on a rotating basis between several blogs.  Next week is Ptlawmom.  We aim for Sunday posts.

All right, ladies.  I'm going for a theme.  I've done the Songs of 1990 and Madonna.  I dedicated two roundups to Glee. I have attempted Billy Joel, Britney and even Bon friggin' Jovi....  How have I never dedicated a Roundup to the songs of Whitney Houston?  I have no idea.

I didn't get So Emotional when I heard she passed away.  I didn't start downloading songs or watch the coverage of her funeral.  But my sister and I reminisced briefly about being pre-teens and putting on neighborhood backyard concerts.  Whitney was a huge part of our repertoire, and hearing certain songs brings me back to summer nights, garage lights, the smell of chlorine, the crackle of worn out cassette tapes played over a cheap radio, holding hairbrushes and dancing on our neighbor's picnic tables.

As in past attempts at music themes, I play with the titles... not so much the lyrics.  I tried to stick with the songs I had heard of before, but Wikipedia gave me some deep-into-the-discography titles that worked.  Oh and some prolific posters managed to get two links in this theme.  Woo!

And, without further delay... here it is, the Whitney Houston Song MILP Roundup.

  • All at Once.  Jenny discovers that this is how work/life comes at you.
  • All the Man That I Need.  Dinei actually has two good looking men in her life.
  • Didn't We Almost Have It All. Magic Cookie on professional development for MILPs.
  • How Will I Know?  Cowgirl in the City won't know she's in the roundup cuz she's unplugged.
  • I Didn't Know My Own Strength. Legally Certifiable's chat with her mom's shrink might have been the least Jerry Springer moment of her week, but at least she's rocking her professional life.
  • If I Told You That.  Alice in Wonderland (new to my roundup!) asks what I can't answer.
  • I'm Every Woman.  Lag Liv's Clairebear is a honey badger and a snugglebug.
  • It's Not Right but It's Okay.  WNW Litigator learns what the plaintiff's side of summary judgment looks like.
  • I Wanna Dance with Somebody.  Reluctant Grownup at Mardi Gras!
  • One Moment in Time.  - R - got 10 hours sleep, time away from the kids, and a sunburned husband.
  • Run to You.  Kate (Today & Tomorrow) runs to her daughter, and is still on time for class.
  • So Emotional.  Izzie had a helluva a trip, and had to leave lots of love behind to go home.
  • Step by Step  Sammie B is on the move & so is Magic Cookie's little X.
  • Why Does It Hurt So Bad.  Attorney At Large redefines headache.
  • Where do broken hearts go.  They find their way home. But then they have to re-enter reality.  But I do have a law degree.
  • You Give Good Love.  Lag Liv is leaving Austin, including a great daycare that loves her kids.

All right -- I am posting the Roundup on a Saturday evening... which is early.  But its done (!) and I have a busy day tomorrow.  If I catch posts from anyone I've missed (and if have time), I'll add additional posts below tomorrow night.  So check back!

Edited to add:
  • ExhaleSuzieJD had her last day in BigFirm, and is heading to NewFirm.

Name dilemmas

I have spent far, far too much time reading baby name websites and blogs, trying to find a name for my daughter that I love as much as I love Clownfish's and Angelfish's names.  The two backup names for AF are still in the mix, with one being a strong contender.  But I still feel as if Boo's name is "out there" and I just haven't found it yet.  I never really struggled like this with my other two kids, so its weird to see how much mental energy this has consumed of late.

I have lots of "rules."  I don't want a name that's too popular/currently trendy. I love names of Irish origin, but lots of the great ones have been taken by close family.  Bullshark kills many of the remaining great Irish girl names with his insistence that a name should be spelled roughly like it sounds.  (I pick on him, but really, its not an unreasonable requirement.  Would the average American teacher know that Aoife is really just Eva?  Or that Ciara is Kira, not see-AR-ah or sierra or key-air-ah?)

For example, we liked Caitlin. Ranked # 340 in 2010.  But with at least 24 recognized variations on the spelling of that name -- see wikipedia page -- and with some of those variations cracking the top 100 in popularity ... the cumulative effect makes it a non-starter.

Its surprising to me that I've become "that mom."

Angelfish, 13 months (almost)

Her expressive vocabulary still consists largely of her sound for Clownfish and Tiger and HI!  She has a sound that sounds like "again" when she wants a book again, and she's starting to vocalize "more" when she does her "more" sign for food.  I think she said "bear" tonight while pointing to a fridge magnet of a bear.  And, during her diaper change this morning, she pointed to her feet and said something that sounded like "stinky" (she wanted me to smell her feet and call them stinky).**  She'll repeat other words with prompting -- BYE! Gunk--oo (Thank you!) -- but the rest of the time, she just babbles. They tell me at daycare that they hear her babbling especially when she'd playing with something -- like a puzzle -- like she's talking to herself, trying to figure it out.

I mentioned that we have the Buddha belly song.  We also have a song about clothes, or lack thereof. We often sing it when we're getting dressed/undressed/diaper changing.  Made up the tune, so it probably isn't as catchy. ("I have no PANTS / no pants on me, / look at me my legs are free!")

She's doing that awesome new walker stompy-style wide-stance toddler walk.  I've seen her take 10-12 steps unassisted.  Bullshark has seen longer stretches because he takes her for walks in the evening, and he lets her hold one of his fingers.

She has a cookie monster plastic cell phone that she holds against the back of her head, not anywhere near her ear. She holds it up and looks expectantly, and smiles happily when I say "Hello!!"

Angelfish still takes off her socks.  But now she tries to put them back on.  This largely consists of waving her socks near her feet and ... hoping, I guess.  But its something.  ("I have no SOCKS / no socks on me, / look at me my toes are free!")

Ok... so here's my "my kid is awesome" moment.  Feel free to roll your eyes.

I've mentioned that she is obsessed with Sandra Boynton's Dinosaur book.  She also loves Boynton's Fuzzy, Fuzzy, Fuzzy book (left).  There is hair on the cow on the front, which makes it ideal for toddler carrying.

So... this has happened not once, but twice.  When I got tired of the Dinosaur book after the fifth time through, or so, I said "Why don't you go get your Fuzzy Fuzzy book?"  The first time, she crawled across the floor and picked it out of a pile of four books and brought it over.  Cool, I thought.  But she had a 1 in 4 chance of finding it, its impressive enough that her receptive vocab allowed her to understand I wanted to read a different book.  A few days later, the exact same scenario played out... and this time, she picked the Fuzzy Fuzzy out of her bookshelf!!  Yay baby!

**So maybe a kid's first words are very indicative of what her parents say to her a lot? This may not reflect well on me.

Affirmation

I mentioned that I was pretty sure something I worked on was going to get reversed on appeal.  It was one of the first things I worked on as a professional lawyer type, and the appeal has been pending forever and ever. I was sure I'd hear any day that it was reversed, and the reversal would be based on the research and reasoning I contributed.  Paranoid? Maybe... but I was invested in this one, and I worked on a tough, novel issue.

I heard this week:  AFFIRMED. Woo!

Work has been stressful lately.  I have a huge project that I'm seriously behind on because I keep getting stuck with other projects.  So this was nice news.

The thing about my job is that something like this won't get me any recognition or kudos (probably true for many jobs) ... but I feel sure the excrement would have hit the oscillating rotary blades had the result been otherwise.

MILP #238

The first of our new Round-uppers has made her debut.  You can find the post at Today & Tomorrow here.

I'm in the rotation in a few weeks. That should be enough time to pull off a theme post, but... well, no promises.

I do promise to continue to direct you to the posts!

Snippets

Angelfish took off walking Friday. 8 steps here, a dozen there. Every time she notices she's walking, she drops to  a crawl.  But a few times, she's given me the "What? I've been doing this forever!" look.

Took the kids to a children's museum yesterday.  AF really seemed to enjoy watching the other kids play, but she was hesitant to get in there and mix it up, even in the rooms designed for her age group.  Maybe next time.  I carried her around all day ("no stroller" policy) which would be impressive to anyone who's ever seen what a chunkinator she is.  She was a rock star considering she missed her nap.  My sis and her daughters and Clownfish had a blast too.

CF and I sing a song called Buddha Belly to/about her.  Its to the tune of this Backyardigans song.  I dare you to watch the video and get that out of your head for the rest of the week. (Buddha Belly Buddha Belly  *boom boom boom* / the belly is coming and its coming soon / belly so big you can see it from the moon / Buddha Belly / Buddha Be-lly *boom boom*)

Bullshark is away this weekend. I have to get the house ready for Superbowl tonight, so when he comes in, he can just settle in to the game. So I have the usual weekend cleaning and laundry, plus a food shopping run, plus I have to make snackies of some description this afternoon.  Thinking stuffed potato skins with broccoli and cheese (that's totally the baby talking).  And... other things?  We'll see what inspiration strikes.  Sometimes I'm a good wife.
